Jenna Gurka : Pin It Yourself

Summer is a perfect season for enjoying the outdoors and warm weather. But if it gets too hot, it can be fun to retreat into a cool area and find yourself crafting your latest DIY project. This week, we’d like to introduce Jenna Gurka, who has a colorful collection of quirky and interesting boards. Her creative taste is sprinkled throughout her pins that are dedicated to fun projects, interior decorating, and nostalgic pop culture.
Hi Jenna! First, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a lifestyle and DIY blogger. I started Let’s Go Sunning this past February, to document my crafts and talk about things I love. I’ve been crafting since I was a kid, always small things or projects my Nana would let me help with. When I went to college and couldn’t afford anything, I figured out ways to make things I wanted or upcycle stuff I’d find on the side of the road. I like the satisfaction that comes with knowing I made something I love.

How do you select which DIY projects to work on? Have you discovered anything over the moon on Pinterest?
When I select DIY projects I start with a want or need. From there, I research all the things I can do with what I have, using pinterest and DIY blogs for inspiration. I usually take on large projects that take a long time, and for some reason I always do things the hard way. My favorite DIY project was this gold fish scale wall art, I found inspiration for it on Pinterest and had to make it happen. I thought I would finish the project and get sick of it in a month or so, but it’s still hanging above my bed, I absolutely adore it!

We noticed you have a board dedicated to Disney, can you tell us a little more about why you created this board. And of course, who’s your favorite Disney character?
Haha, yes! I have a full board dedicated to vintage Disneyland photos, I also have one dedicated to Snow White, who happens to be my favorite Disney Character. I grew up in Southern California and my family took frequent Disneyland trips. I love the attention to detail at the park and the fact that it is always evolving, the vintage photos make me so happy and I love to see the difference between the park today and 50 years ago.

Your blog is called “Let’s Go Sunning” - how did you come up with his name and most importantly, what do you love most about summer?
Let’s Go Sunning is actually the name of a song. It’s used in a video game my husband and I used to play often. It’s so upbeat and retro it made it to our regular playlist rotation. My husband and I always sing it when it is warm out and it stuck.
Growing up, I always took summer for granted, I went to the beach a lot, but I also spent more time than I should have indoors. Now that I’m older I don’t waste my summers at all. I love having beach days with my family when I visit, camping with my friends in Los Gatos, and eating outside, but mostly I love that everyone is more energized to take advantage of the longer day and warmer weather, so I get to see my friends a lot more.
You love fashion, design, and DIY. Who are some of your inspirations on Pinterest?
I have so many! If I had to choose, I find myself repinning Emily Henderson and Jan of Poppy Talk a lot. My bestie, Kendra Cunningham has never pinned something I haven’t loved. Who else would be pinning Halloween stuff in July with me? Also, my good friend Sara Brewster-Bouw might just be my pinning soul mate.
Thanks for the pinterview, Jenna! Hope the rest of your summer is filled with lots of… sunning of course. Happy pinning!
