Mari Richards: Playing with Pins

Everyone uses Pinterest in their own special way, and we were fascinated by Mari Richards, who is a toy designer, artist, mom, and part-time professor. Not only does she have an interesting background, her boards will draw you into her curious world.

Hi Mari! First, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

What I do is such a hodgepodge, it might take a minute! I’ve been a toy designer since 1998, working in the industry designing infant toys, kids plush, puppets, dolls, illustration, and pattern. After working in-house for years, I finally turned to freelance (and blogging) in 2009 when my daughter was born. You can see some of work at mr design. I’m also an adjunct faculty at local art colleges here in Minneapolis, which is so invigorating. And I started my blog, Small for Big, to help me horde all of my favorite design finds. I like to focus on kids design, but I keep that category nice and broad to include anything that’s colorful, playful, quirky and inspirational to me. I’m a huge creative geek, whether it’s fine art, knitting, watercolors with my 3.5 year old daughter, or playing my piano. The trick is finding the time to keep me inspired!

Your profile tells us that you’re a Toy Designer, Artist, Part-Time Professor, Mom, all-around Creative Type, & Design Blogger. Tell us your secret, how do you juggle it all and how does Pinterest fit into your day?

Ooph! I ask myself that question all the time. It’s a complicated mix, but I’ve found I really love having all the variety in my life, I’m much happier and more grounded now than when I worked full-time. I’m fortunate that all of those titles (well, except the Mom one) are kind of part-time. So I try to focus my energies on whatever deadline is currently underway – my freelance projects usually take priority. I would say “balance” is not a place I stay in long, but instead I swing from one area to the other as the need arises! I’m very, very, very thankful that my daughter still likes naptime.

Pinterest gives me my quiet restful moments in the day – it brings me creative calm, inspiration, and a chance to take a couple minutes to connect with something visually in the middle of all of my chaos. Thank god for the new Pinterest iPad app!

There is a lot of interesting pins in your “Inspiration” board. Can you take us behind the scene of this board—why you created it, what inspires you, and how you use it?

On any given day I have several creative projects jostling for space inside my head – freelance ideas, personal creative projects, DIY posts for the blog, future inspirations, artistic goals, etc. So my inspiration board is a highlight of where my creative head is at at any given moment. I fill it with color ideas, character inspiration, artistic techniques, visual solutions, and DIY inspirations. I’ve thought about separating the ideas into individual inspiration boards, but I really like seeing all the overlaps. It’s probably my favorite board – and the most personal to me, because I can see it changing over time as the ideas in my head morph and grow too.

What advice do you have for moms getting started in the blogging world?

Keep going! It’s hard, and in the beginning when no one is reading or visiting it can be frustrating, but find your niche, get involved with other bloggers (some bigger than you, some smaller than you!) and enjoy the process. Do it for yourself, not for anyone else. My blog is a labor of love, and after 3 years, I can’t imagine not doing it. But, it’s not the thing that pays the bigger bills, and it may never be! Also, I’d definitely recommend hanging out in several Alt Summit classes online to get some pointers and meet other bloggers.

Do you have any favorite Pinners you follow? Share us the goods!

I have some favorites, definitely. Celina Bailey from Petit a Petit and Family is probably number one, sometimes I swear I could just repin every single thing she posts. Coos Ahhs, of the blog Coos and Ahhs, is always inspirational with a Euro twist. Victoria Hudgens from A Subtle Revelry shares lots of beautiful party and décor finds. And, for all of my crazy food-allergy recipes, Chocolate-Covered Katie’s one and only board is a must!

Thanks for the pinterview, Mari! It’s always nice to be reminded of the little inspirations we encounter each day. Happy pinning!

Jenna Gurka : Pin It Yourself

Summer is a perfect season for enjoying the outdoors and warm weather. But if it gets too hot, it can be fun to retreat into a cool area and find yourself crafting your latest DIY project. This week, we’d like to introduce Jenna Gurka, who has a colorful collection of quirky and interesting boards. Her creative taste is sprinkled throughout her pins that are dedicated to fun projects, interior decorating, and nostalgic pop culture.

Hi Jenna! First, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a lifestyle and DIY blogger. I started Let’s Go Sunning this past February, to document my crafts and talk about things I love. I’ve been crafting since I was a kid, always small things or projects my Nana would let me help with. When I went to college and couldn’t afford anything, I figured out ways to make things I wanted or upcycle stuff I’d find on the side of the road. I like the satisfaction that comes with knowing I made something I love.

How do you select which DIY projects to work on? Have you discovered anything over the moon on Pinterest?

When I select DIY projects I start with a want or need. From there, I research all the things I can do with what I have, using pinterest and DIY blogs for inspiration. I usually take on large projects that take a long time, and for some reason I always do things the hard way. My favorite DIY project was this gold fish scale wall art, I found inspiration for it on Pinterest and had to make it happen. I thought I would finish the project and get sick of it in a month or so, but it’s still hanging above my bed, I absolutely adore it!

We noticed you have a board dedicated to Disney, can you tell us a little more about why you created this board. And of course, who’s your favorite Disney character?

Haha, yes! I have a full board dedicated to vintage Disneyland photos, I also have one dedicated to Snow White, who happens to be my favorite Disney Character. I grew up in Southern California and my family took frequent Disneyland trips. I love the attention to detail at the park and the fact that it is always evolving, the vintage photos make me so happy and I love to see the difference between the park today and 50 years ago.

Your blog is called “Let’s Go Sunning” - how did you come up with his name and most importantly, what do you love most about summer?

Let’s Go Sunning is actually the name of a song. It’s used in a video game my husband and I used to play often. It’s so upbeat and retro it made it to our regular playlist rotation. My husband and I always sing it when it is warm out and it stuck.

Growing up, I always took summer for granted, I went to the beach a lot, but I also spent more time than I should have indoors. Now that I’m older I don’t waste my summers at all. I love having beach days with my family when I visit, camping with my friends in Los Gatos, and eating outside, but mostly I love that everyone is more energized to take advantage of the longer day and warmer weather, so I get to see my friends a lot more.

You love fashion, design, and DIY. Who are some of your inspirations on Pinterest?

I have so many! If I had to choose, I find myself repinning Emily Henderson and Jan of Poppy Talk a lot. My bestie, Kendra Cunningham has never pinned something I haven’t loved. Who else would be pinning Halloween stuff in July with me? Also, my good friend Sara Brewster-Bouw might just be my pinning soul mate.

Thanks for the pinterview, Jenna! Hope the rest of your summer is filled with lots of… sunning of course. Happy pinning!

Jenna Weber: Eat, Live, Run

Yesterday was National Ice Cream Day, and we hope you spent your summer day with a cool treat. As foodies find their recipe inspirations from other Pinners, we’d like to we’d like to introduce you to Jenna, the food-loving blogger of Eat Live Run and the Fresh Tastes Blog at PBS. She loves pinning everything from DIY projects to really cute puppies, and we’re glad to pinterview her this week.

Hi Jenna! First, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a food blogger, recipe developer and author. I started my blog, Eat Live Run, when I was in culinary school back in 2007 as a way to document my time at school. Well, I kept at it and eventually, it turned into a full-time job and business for me! I really love writing fun, creative recipes that inspire others to get back in their kitchen. My recipes usually feature fresh, seasonal ingredients and don’t involve a million hard-to-find ingredients. My first book, White Jacket Required, is a memoir of my time at culinary school and will be out on September 4th! And no, I don’t run!

What other interests do you have?

I just got my yoga teacher certification and love it! I only teach a couple times a month, but it’s a great break from the kitchen every once in awhile. I also love reading, hiking, traveling and encouraging women to find their passion in life and go for it!

How do you use Pinterest?

I use Pinterest mainly for recipes. I love pinning what my food blogger friends are making and find great new dinner inspiration that way! It’s a great way to keep all the recipes I want to try in one location.

What inspires your recipes?

My recipes are inspired by what’s at the farmer’s market. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and thus, am pretty lucky that there are some great farmers markets and roadside produce stands nearby. I base my menus on what ingredients are looking fresh and then go from there! My dessert recipes are inspired by my insatiable sweet tooth. I am a true chocoholic.

What advice do you have for bloggers and best practices of using Pinterest?

My best advice is to really get involved in the food blogger community! When you put yourself out there (via Pinterest and other social media platforms), you are automatically sharing your posts, thoughts and ideas. It’s a great way to get involved and meet other bloggers. Pinterest makes it easy to share your blog material with thousands of people who might have never visited your site before. It’s a great way to gain new readers!

Based on your foodie following, who are some of your favorite pinners to follow?

Hard question! I love so many people on Pinterest, but if I had to name a few I think it would be one of my fellow food bloggers, Marla Meridith because she always finds the best stuff to pin! She is a wonderful photographer and her pins always inspire me to be better as well. I also love to follow TODAY because they always put the cutest photos of baby animals on there. And, mrs. french * because everything she pins is just fabulous.

Thanks for the pinterview, Jenna! Keep those recipes (and cute puppies) coming. Happy pinning!
