Pinning Tip: Group Boards

image

If you love to pin, you might want to consider inviting someone to pin with you. Whether you are planning a trip with your family or throwing a dinner party for your friends, group boards provide an easy way to use Pinterest as a collaborative tool.

Here are simple steps to get started.

image

To add contributors to a group board, go to that board and click the Edit button. On the next page, you can type in the names of other people you would like to add as contributors.

You must follow at least one board belonging to the Pinner you want to invite in order to add him/her as a contributor. Type his/her name into the text field. Potential matches to this name will begin to load; when you see the person you want, click their name, and click Add. When you are finished, click Save Settings.

When you add a contributor, he/she will receive an email to accept the invitation to pin to the group board. Once the contributor(s) accept your invitation, he/she can pin on the same board with you.

Group boards are a fun way to organize ideas with others. Here are some things to keep in mind:

-Depending on your email settings, you might receive an email when a contributor pins to the group board. If you do not want this option, you can turn off the “Group Pins” email setting in your notification preferences.

-If you would like to remove a group board you created or remove yourself as a collaborator, you can delete or leave the group board.

-When you follow a group board, you will see all the pins being added to this group board, regardless of the person who is pinning the items. This means you might see pins from people you are not following.

-As a reminder, please respect other pinners: we recommend sending group board invites to people who have expressed interest in, and avoid sending multiple requests.

To get your creative juices flowing, here are some examples of how Pinners are using group boards:

Stephanie and Patrick are collecting decoration ideas and things they are looking to purchase for their new apartment.

Ash and Sabrina are planning their next trip to New York City, including restaurants they want to try.

Michelle and her mom are getting inspired for an upcoming wedding in the family. Cakes, dresses, and flowers galore!

Kate, Leslie, and Amanda are preparing for the Fall season with pumpkin recipes such as cupcakes, pies, and more.

Happy (group) pinning!

Pinning Tip: Collaborative Boards

image

Group projects, big projects, a second set of eyes, or just for fun - whatever your reasons for using collaborative boards, we hope it’s a helpful tool for pinners.

For example, Team Pinterest has a board for posters and things we’d like to have for the office. We can all pin our finds, whether they’re serious or not…

Here’s how to do it:

Go to the board you want to edit or create a new board by clicking Add > Add a Board up at the top toolbar on Pinterest.

On the board’s settings menu, select “Me + Contributors.”

You must follow at least one board belonging to a user in order to add him/her as a contributor.

Start typing his/her username into the text field. Potential matches to this username will begin to load; when you see the person you want, click their name. Click Add. When you are finished adding people, click Save Board Settings.

You can also invite someone outside of Pinterest to get started and pin with you.

Users who you add as contributors will receive an email notification. They can opt out or choose to remove themselves at any time in the future. You can also remove them yourself by going back to board settings and clicking the X next to their name. Whenever you make changes, just be sure to click Save Board Settings at the bottom.

Hope this tip will help some of you on your way to some great collaborative projects or inspiration-sharing!

Pinning Tip: Rearrange Your Boards

image

There’s absolutely no denying Pinterest users are a visual crowd. We like making boards devoted to colors, color-combinations, patterns, shapes, and it seems like we really, really like “Keep Calm” posters.

So in case you didn’t know, you can have your boards arranged exactly the way you’d like on your profile.

Just click your username at the top-right toolbar and then click the Rearrange button at the corner of your page.

Now you can click-and-drag your boards until you have the order you want.

Click the Save button and then you’re all set.

For those of you who use Pinterest as a personal reference or an extension of your blog, this can help you highlight what’s most important to you or your readers.

Ideas for a Halloween party can relax at the bottom of your page, whereas floral arrangements should get cozy with table settings.

Of course, a lot of users have suggested the ability to rearrange pins too, so if we add that feature we’ll be sure to post about it here!

Pinning Tip: Upload Pins

image

image

image

Okay, you’ve installed the Pin It bookmarklet and you’re happily pinning from your favorite sites…but what about a picture you’ve had saved for ages?

Another tip I’ve been asked to clarify is how to pin photos languishing in your computer’s folders.

So, here is what you can do:

Anywhere within Pinterest, you can click Add > Add a Pin on the toolbar near your username.

This will open up a Pin It form. However, instead of pasting in a URL, click Upload.

Now you can browse and select an image already saved on your computer. Click Upload and then finish off your pin as usual.

I hope that helps some of you transfer your old folders into one place so you can get that birthday party or new business card done better and faster. As always, if you have any burning questions, you can visit our Support page for tips.

Pinning Tip: Permalinks

image

image

Last week’s “Pinterest for Beginners” round-up set off a flood of requests to show users how to pin from permalinks. And in case you thought “permalink” was just a horrendous typo, this post will help you pin responsibly.

When browsing your favorite sites, especially blogs or forums, you’ll often see a picture that must be pinned.

For instance, on The Boston Globe’s Big Picture blog, this volcano needs to be on a board, now.

But wait, take one more step:

Click the title or time-stamp of a blog post to be taken from the main site to the individual entry. Your volcano will always live on this specific URL, even as more and more posts get added to the main page.

Pinning from the permalink lets you refer back to the photographer or the instructions of a recipe with ease. The source-link Pinterest saves automatically will be the most helpful to you and others - truly pinning at its best.

If there are any other tips you’d like to learn more about, you can always visit the Support page.

Pinning Tip: Pinterest Bookmarklet in IE 7 & 8

image

At long last, the Pinterest Bookmarklet now works in Internet Explorer 7 and 8. If you’re an Internet Explorer user, you have Paul to thank for digging through IE’s many idiosycracies. We also have to give a shout-out to our officemate Dan from http://chart.io who lent us a PC to test.

How to Install the Pinterest Bookmarklet in Internet Explorer

1. Make sure your “Favorites Toolbar’ is visible. If it’s not, right click on any part of the menu and make sure “Favorites” is checked”

2. Visit www.pinterest.com/about. Right-click on the blue link that says ⚲Pin It. Click “Add to Favorites”

3. Be sure to save the favorite in your “Favorites” folder so that it appears in your Toolbar.

That’s it! Anytime you’re on another website, you can pin an image by clicking the Pin It button.

Pinning Tip: Deleting a Pin

We’ve had a lot of questions from our early pinners about how to delete a pin.  Maybe you pinned it to the wrong pinboard.  Maybe you pinned it twice.  Maybe you’re just tired of looking at it.  Either way, you want it gone.

Here’s a quick walk-through of how to delete a pin:

1.  Go to the closeup view of the pin you want to delete.  (That’s the view with the big image of the single pin.)

2.  Click the “Edit” button in the upper-right corner above the image.

3.  Click the “Delete” button in the bottom-right corner.

And, presto, the pin is gone — and off to that big pinboard in the sky!

We’ll be compiling this and some other tip & tricks into a Help Section soon.

But if you have ideas about how to make the delete-a-pin process more intuitive, please let us know in the comments below.  We love feedback.

Pinning Tip: Following on Pinterest

image

Just like Twitter, you can “follow” on Pinterest.  Following lets you see the pins that you care about the most.  There are two ways to follow on Pinterest:

Follow a User: When you visit someone’s Pinterest profile, you’ll see a button that says “Follow All”.  Once you push it, you’ll be following all the pinboards that person has created, and you’ll automatically follow any pinboard she creates in the future. I use “Follow All” for people whose taste I really admire, like my friend Sha and my sister Elizabeth.

Follow a Pinboard: Sometimes, you just want to follow a specific pinboard.  For instance, I LOVE Joy’s For the Home pinboard, but I’m steering clear of her Tasty Treats pinboard because it makes me too hungry.  In this case, I can just follow her individual pinboard.

As the Pinterest community grows, try following boards and people that really speak to your interests - whether that’s art, architecture, food, interior design, photography, or traveling!  It will make Pinterest more personal and fun.
